Women carry the same refined essence that manifests as radiance, emotional grace, hormonal equilibrium, and fertility. But Ayurveda adds one deeper understanding—Shukra is not confined to men. Both govern vitality, libido, fertility, and masculine character. The link between modern testosterone and Shukra is almost direct.
Researchers (e.g., Leproult & Van Cauter, 2011; Penev, 2008) have shown that after as little as 1 week of restricted sleep, daytime testosterone levels drop by 10% to 15%. It is about honoring and restoring the body’s natural cycles— synchronizing sleep, hormones, and genetics—to unlock both lifespan and healthspan Getting around 8 hours of good-quality sleep a night will help keep your testosterone levels healthy. A small study of 10 healthy young men found that getting just five hours of sleep a night for a week lowered their testosterone levels by 10 to 15 percent.
It is an observation that the hormonal system is interconnected, and optimizing one input does not automatically optimize the whole network. DHEA and its sulfated form, DHEA-S, appear to influence mood regulation, stress resilience, and neurological signaling in ways that testosterone alone does not fully address. Clinicians who work in hormone optimization have noted that some of these residual symptoms may relate to DHEA and its metabolites, including compounds that the brain and nervous system use for functions beyond reproduction. DHEA is a hormone, not a supplement in the conventional sense, and its effects vary considerably from person to person. For others, it may explain why optimization on paper does not always feel like optimization in real life. Unlike testosterone, which is the main target of TRT, DHEA does not get replaced by default. It is one of the most abundant circulating steroids in the human body during your twenties, and one of the most steadily declining ones after that.
Therefore, these mammals may provide a model for studying clinical populations among humans with sexual arousal deficits such as hypoactive sexual desire disorder. Sexual arousal and masturbation in women produce small increases in testosterone concentrations. Regular monitoring during treatment typically includes hematocrit levels every 3-6 months to prevent polycythemia, along with PSA monitoring in men over 40.
Women's level of testosterone is higher when measured pre-intercourse vs. pre-cuddling, as well as post-intercourse vs. post-cuddling. Androgens may modulate the physiology of vaginal tissue and contribute to female genital sexual arousal. Men who watch sexually explicit films also report increased motivation and competitiveness, and decreased exhaustion. Every mammalian species examined demonstrated a marked increase in a male's testosterone level upon encountering a novel female.
Long before laboratories measured hormones or neuroscience mapped the brain, the rishis understood that the body functions in rhythm with nature. Deny sleep, and you deny the body its chance to restore life itself. It is spent one restless night at a time and rebuilt one peaceful sleep at a time. Your body spends the night cleaning toxins instead of building hormones. The pituitary gland responds instantly, and the deep-rest hormones flow again. have been undertaken on the relationship between more general aggressive behavior, and feelings, and testosterone.|This is not philosophy—it is biology obeying its true timetable. When a man learns to rest with the sunset and rise with the dawn, he is living both science and spirituality. The sages said that sleep, properly taken, mirrors samadhi—a natural meditative absorption gifted by nature. Ayurveda explains this as the merging of the senses into the mind, and the mind into the soul.|Two deeper phases of NREM sleep (phases 3 and 4) together known as slow wave sleep (SWS) tend to occur predominantly in the earlier part of the night and become lighter thereafter. Experimental data suggest that testosterone may modulate individual vulnerability to subjective symptoms of sleep restriction. Treatment of moderate to severe OSA with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) does not reliably increase testosterone levels in most studies.|This GABAergic activity may contribute to a calming or anxiolytic effect in some individuals, which could support the transition into sleep. DHEA also appears to interact with GABA receptors in the brain, the same receptors targeted by many anti-anxiety and sleep-aid medications, through its conversion to neurosteroids like allopregnanolone. The question of DHEA at bedtime connects directly to this idea. This is why some men, and some clinicians, refer to sleep as the multiplier. Among the lingering complaints men on TRT describe, poor sleep is one of the most common and the most consequential.}
Like other steroid hormones, testosterone is derived from cholesterol (Figure 1). Lipophilic hormones (soluble in lipids but not in water), such as steroid hormones, including testosterone, are transported in water-based blood plasma through specific and non-specific proteins. In one experiment, subjects who interacted with handguns showed higher testosterone levels and aggression than those who interacted with toys. Higher pre-natal testosterone indicated by a low digit ratio as well as adult testosterone levels increased risk of fouls or aggression among male players in a soccer game. The masculinization of the brain is not just mediated by testosterone levels at the adult stage, but also testosterone exposure in the womb. The same research found fathers (outside competitive environments) had the lowest testosterone levels compared to other males.
